CENTENNIAL HAPPENINGS
The City of Lansing will be welcoming home from around the world its Reo-built products, from the smallest Reo lawnmowers to the largest Diamond Reo semi-tractors. Our goal is to have one Reo-built vehicle representing each production year from 1905 - 1975. A big effort is under way to attract examples of Reo-built military vehicles. There will be touring events in the countryside, and many in-town activities to help us all Remember Reo. On Saturday, July 17, 2004, we will have a grand parade of Reos on Washington Avenue, proceeding South to where the Reo buildings once stood. The general public will be encouraged to view the parade.
We are seeking nationally-recognized historians to present automobile and truck keynote addresses. At Lansing’s R. E. Olds Transportation Museum, a nationally- recognized authority on early automobiles will trace the evolution of R. E. Olds’ automotive engineering ideas, from his earliest steam carriages, through electric vehicles, the Curved Dash aids, and, finally, the 1905 Reos. These promise to be terrific learning experiences.
A nostalgic recreation of a band concert in the park is being planned. The Reo Band occasionally performed in Lansing’s Durant Park. A recreation by the Lansing Concert Band is planned.
All Reo retirees and former Reo employees will be actively encouraged to attend the Centennial, and to walk among and experience the surviving examples of the fine workmanship of the Reo factories. We will seek their memories of the Company.
As more specific plans are finalized, they will be posted to this web site. Keep watch !
