| THE LAST REO AUTO (?) RETURNS TO LANSING   |
|      It was both a happy and sad Reo day in Jerome, Michigan, on April 13, 2002, as Reo and Cleona VanCamp's 1936 (1937 prototype ?) Flying Cloud Reo Model 6C was sold to Tom and Linda Morefield of Grand Ledge (near Lansing), Michigan. Long-term members of the Reo Club, Reo and Cleona enjoyed the car from 1980 to 2002. The Flying Cloud was a fixture in the Club, frequently seen atop the bed of the Van Camp's 1959 Gold Comet-powered Model E Reo flat-bed truck. (Cleona recalled being pressed into service to drive the 1959 farm truck, helping deliver grain to the elevator during harvest time. )
Southern Michigan farmers LaVerne and Mabel VanCamp owned many Reo cars and trucks, and thought Reo would be a good first name for their infant son. Mr. Reo VanCamp recalls that as a youth he didn't really cater to his first name, but he grew to accept it. Reo will be 82 years young on July 23. Many will recall that Reo's birthday frequently occurred during the annual Reo convention, and was recognized at our banquets. (Reo and Cleona's 60th wedding anniversary will be celebrated May 3, 2002. Congratulations! )      Tom and Linda Morefield are the proud new owners of the unique 1936 Reo. The car has a number of unusual features, and many in the Reo Club have suggested it was Reo's prototype for a 1937 -model car that never made it into production.      Reo and Cleona were gracious host and hostess to a large group of Reo-ites who assisted in transporting the car back to Lansing. Reo and Cleona were sad to see the Reo depart their farm home of 52 years, but all were happy to have the car return to Lansing and stay in the Reo Club. New co-owner Tom Morefield worked for Reo from 1960 to 1975.      Reo and Cleona declared that they will journey to Lansing in July 2004 to view their former car on display during the Reo Centennial Celebration.   |
