An Oldsmobile named Mz. Lucy comes home. A stunning 62-year-old Oldsmobile named "Mz. Lucy" has returned to the city of its birth as a gift to the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum. With side-mounted spare tires and glistening black paint, it is said by some veteran collectors to be the finest 1937 Oldsmobile touring sedan in the world. The car was lovingly restored by Murphy and Darla Walker of Fort Worth, Texas. They named it "Mz. Lucy" after the line "Come away with me, Lucille, in my merry Oldsmobile" in the famous song. Murphy Walker's first car was a 1937 Oldsmobile. That was the first year Oldsmobile offered an all-steel body. After his retirement as an aerospace engineer, the Walkers went looking for another 1937 Oldsmobile, and bought Mz. Lucy from its original owner. The restoration took them only 11 months -- an extremely short time to produce an automobile of this quality. In its first showing, Mz. Lucy was named best of show at the 1996 meeting of the National Antique Olds Club. Since that first show, the Walkers have won many other awards and honors with the car. Of their decision to give the car to the Museum, Darla Walker said, "We had a fairytale three years with Mz. Lucy, and we decided it would be best to donate it to an appropriate permanent home." The R. E. Olds Transportation Museum in downtown Lansing is open to the public, and has a wide-ranging collection of Oldsmobiles, REOS, and other Lansing-built vehicles. |
